Educators That Transform The World
The Faculty of Education plays a significant role in teacher education and in the continuous professional development of practising teachers to meet the evolving educational needs of Botswana.
The primary aim of the Faculty’s pre-service teacher education programmes is to develop competent student teachers who can teach effectively and facilitate learning. Strong emphasis is also placed on in-service teacher education through a wide range of programmes designed to build capacity, upgrade qualifications and enhance professional competence. The Faculty strives to be recognised as a centre of excellence where staff and students contribute meaningfully to educational development and transformation in Botswana through the integration of teaching, learning, research, community engagement and professional development. The Faculty is supported by highly qualified academic staff who are widely recognised for their contributions to research, teaching and community service, and who are committed to the teaching profession. Teacher development programmes are continually refined to ensure that all offerings are quality-assured and responsive to national needs.
A flagship achievement of BA ISAGO has been the upgrading of primary school teachers from the Primary Teachers’ Certificate (PTC) to the National Professional Diploma in Education (NPDE), a programme that continues to support more than 2,000 teachers who previously held only the Primary Teachers’ Certificate.
Since 2003, the Faculty has offered teacher development programmes on a full-time, part-time and block release basis. This affirms the University’s experience and expertise gained over more than two decades. Preparations are at an advanced stage to deliver most of the Faculty’s programmes through online platforms. The Faculty of Education is consolidating its position in Botswana and aims to become a leading centre of educational excellence.
